Los Angeles Pink Dragons

Founded in 2003, LAPD is the first breast cancer survivor team in Los Angeles. They got their start with coaching from LARD. Even now, they have LARD's support and aid to make themselves an even better team.

Breast Cancer teams started in order to aid cancer recovery. There was a time when breast cancer survivors were discouraged from upper body exercise for fear of developing chronic swelling of the arm and chest area. A Canadian doctor, Dr. Don McKenzie, was one of the pioneers to dispel this myth. Some of the test subjects showed that exercise actually improved their recovery and the team became part of the patient's support network.

First Annual Paddle Art Contest

LONG BEACH, April 4, 2009 - The Los Angeles Racing Dragons (LARD) invites the local community to enter an inaugural art contest with a chance to win a carbon fiber paddle.  The purpose of the contest is to promote the sport of dragon boat. All students 15-24 years-old are eligible to enter.

The winner will be invited to the 2009 Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival in Long Beach, CA, on Saturday, Aug 1st, 2009, where they will be presented with a carbon fiber paddle. The winning artwork will also be featured on a wooden paddle and the LARD web site.

This contest is inspired by one of LARD's very own members, Arthur Yeh, who passed away in 2007. Arthur was passionate about both art and the sport of dragon boat. In his memory, LARD is launching the first annual Paddle Art contest to promote the sport he loved and to nurture artistic creativity in the local community.
